What is a Twin Flame? “Truth & Myth”

A Belief: Twin flames are a special type of soul connection, be it platonic, or romantic.

A Myth: A higher consciousness being splits itself in two and incarnates as two beings. (Should we examine the motivation for a higher consciousness being to split itself in two and incarnate in two different places, heedless to its own whereabouts and relying on chance to unify itself? Or shall we accept that ‘the universe’ will certainly join them so there is no danger in remaining lost? Then why separate at a distance in the first place? Giggles? Shall we go further to design a complex story around the motivation? Say, life is a game, a hologram, a testing ground for the Gods, and so…? The rationale is for cave-dwellers. There can be no right or wrong in this pursuit. There is no truth.

A Belief Based on a Myth: The Twin Flame incarnates to raise the vibration of Earth as a whole, in an effort to bring humanity closer to love and harmony.

An Examination of the Belief: Historically there is a 50-50 split in consciousness. War, poverty, power-control, suffering has and continues to exist in direct proportion to peace, plenty, civil development and liberty, or liberation. In fact, looking around, it might even be said to lean in favor of the suffering on any given day.

History: 2500 years ago. In the Symposium, Plato presents a theory of the original humans having two sets of every body part and organ: four arms, four legs, etc. Plato mentioned how these humans were then split into two, forever destined to look for their other half. Aristotle said “Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” Plato said “and when one of them meets with his other half, the actual half of himself, the pair are lost in an amazement of love and friendship and intimacy and one will not be out of the other’s sight even for a moment.”

A Human Experience: An exciting and explosively strong connection with another human being. Sometimes they stay together. Sometimes the drift apart. When they come back together again, the bond is even stronger. There’s nothing empirical to distinguish the twin experience from the more mundane experience of two people bonding – it’s a shared feeling that unites them. Then truly, what more can be said about this?

Not everything can be rationalized! Not everything can be explained! Not everything can be proved by science!

Familiar refrains. Of course, not. How could I ever prove that pizza tastes like rotten apples? To me. I can’t even prove gravity. Luckily someone else has done that for me.

At the moment, Twin Flames rest incontrovertibly in the realm of personal experience and belief. The mythos has defined the pathos. We take from stories known and make them our own and we may die before we give up our precious storylines. There is, at present, nothing apart from the human experience of interaction and connection that bolsters the Twin Flame theory.

And yet, I’ve enjoyed that explosion of recognition, that depth of relating, of true love, that often defines the Twin Flame experience. My personal experience was with my Guru, a man older than me by 25 years. Does age matter? Gender?

Refer back to the myth. A higher consciousness splits itself in two, to incarnate for a purpose. So another question is then do the two forms incarnate together, necessitating the experience be between two people of precisely identical ages? Does the split occur along yin/yang lines? If the purpose is to raise the vibration, cannot two men do the same? If sexuality has nothing to do with it… And on and on will come the questions as we unpack the viability of a myth among the living.

For me at least, the concept construct of Twin Flame ideology raises more questions than it answers. That is not to say that it is not true. However, like gravity, I cannot prove it one way or the other. And as far as I know, nobody since Plato has either.
